ROTARY ANNUAL DISTRICT CONFERENCE

OCTOBER 2008

In October, eleven of us attended the District Conference in Eastbourne and enjoyed a weekend of interest, fun and fellowship, not to mention sunshine.  The conference was shorter than in the past and started on Friday lunch-time, ending at around 1pm on Sunday.  The speakers were varied and interesting, comprising a very moving talk from Andy Millward about Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres; a rivetting and very entertaining talk by Dom Antony Sutch, who frequently appears on Radio 4's Thought for the Day; An inspiring talk by Alison Streeter MBE, the Queen of the Channel; an interesting, humourous and moving talk by Mike Brace, an after dinner speaker who raises many thousands of pounds for various charities; A very funny and observant talk by Pat Langham and finally a talk by the world famous actor Leslie Phillips CBE.

As well as guest speakers, we had Rotary speakers comprising PDG Robert Hunter and the RI President's Representative, Jerry L Hall, both of whom gave inspiring and in parts moving talks.  The RIBI Presdent Ian Thomson also talked to us and made us laugh, getting over his message in a memorable and striking way.  He told many jokes, which kept us laughing long after conference had ended.

The Hall of Friendship was open throughout the conference and was a good place to chat to old friends as well as being able to make new ones.  Mike bought a warm hat for when he is tin-shaking and as he had three ladies with him at the time, he made sure of the right choice of style and colour.

Our hotel, the Chatsworth, has been renovated and was most comfortable with good food and plenty of room in the bar for a few drinks and a long chat after the various sessions at conference.  Some of us even managed to have lunch outside on the terrace on both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday night saw the dinner and ball, after which we returned to our hotel in readiness for Sunday.

On top of all this, we had a presentation from the incoming GSE team as well as brief presentations by our own Arthur Chapman and Mike Hodge about Interact and GSE respectively.  We also had a film about Leonard Cheshire International and varous other talks by District Officers on several different subjects.

All in all, it was a good experience and the fellowship was second to none.  Roll on next year!

ANNUAL REPORT 2007-8

  CLUB OFFICERS 2007-8

President: Gery Rognaldsen

President-elect: Barbara Taylor

Hon. Secretary: Jenny Remfry

Hon. Treasurer: Arthur Chapman

OUR MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR

1.  Christmas Day Party for the Elderly

at the Ewen Hall in Wood Street.

“The best Christmas pudding I have           ever tasted” said one of our 55 guests

who would otherwise have been alone

 on Christmas Day.

President Gery with one of the  guests. The Mayor of Barnet - Cllr Maureen Braun, Cllr Brian Coleman and the Rotary District Governor - Colin  Matthews, also came and talked to everybody.

We took out five dinners to house-bound people and helped Friends in Need in East Barnet  to entertain another 50 elderly people.

2. The Jubilee Sailing Trust

We sponsored Alan Williamson, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair, to join the crew of the tall ship Lord Nelson, accompanied by a carer from the Marie Foster Centre in Barnet and Rotarian Scott Maclachlan.    They sailed from Docklands and crossed the North Sea. Here, Alan is being hoisted up the rigging to the first platform. On his return, Alan said “It was fantastic”

3. Rotary Kids Out Day

We took eleven disabled children and their teachers from Oakleigh School to Paradise Wildlife Park. Here are some of them:  their happy smiles say it all.

KIDS OUT!

On Wednesday we took a class of children and their carers from Oakleigh School to Paradise Park.  It was a lovely day and we all had an enjoyable time, with lunch and several visits to special events at the Park.  Many thanks to Robin Marson for organising the outing.

Kids Out happens every June and Rotary Clubs all over the country take part, so wherever you were on Wednesday, you were likely to have seen groups of children, teachers and Rotarians dressed in Kids Out t-shirts and baseball caps.

 46th Annual Sports Dinner

Seven fellows attended the 46th Annual Sports Dinner, where the speaker was Former World Champion Boxer, John Conteh.  Congratulations to Scott and Paul on winning the District Golf Trophy.  Our club also came joint 5th in the district sports table, so are very pleased.

Rotary Unpacks a Shelter Box

Shoppers at the Spires in Barnet on Saturday 31st May were surprised to find Rotarian Mike Hodge outside Waitrose erecting a tent big enough for ten people with cooking equipment, sleeping bags and water filters.

Taking it all out of the Shelter Box was easy – getting it back in again at the end of the day was more difficult. But by then the members of the Rotary Club of Barnet and East Barnet had collected almost £300 towards the purchase of another Shelter Box to go to Burma for the victims of the cyclone or to China for the people made homeless by the earthquake in May.

How will he get it all back?

Stroke Awareness Day

On Saturday 26 April, we again achieved great success in persuading the people of Barnet to have a free blood-pressure check and were honoured by a visit from the deputy Mayor as well as from our MP Teresa Villiers.

The weather was wonderful and the people were out in force, so we were very pleased with out achievment.  Many, many thanks to the medical practitioners, both doctors and nurses, without whom the event would not have been possible.

Many thanks for Jasmine Marson for the photographs.

FLOOD APPEAL.

President Gery Rognaldsen and other members of the club, together with members of Enfield and other North London Rotary Clubs, were out in force collecting in support of the victims of the recent floods.  They raised over £ 400 and would like to say a big thank-you to the public for the generous support they received.

Here is a photograph of our president collecting outside The Spires.

KIDS OUT.  (Report by PP Richard Jefferies).

As part of the national Rotary Kids Out annual event, we took a coach load of 15 children with Downs Syndrome, 16 adults and 7 siblings to Paradise Wild Life Park at Broxbourne.

The group were from the Barnet PODS (Parents of Down Syndrome children)  (visit

http://www.parentsofdownsyndrome.org.uk/index.htm  )

A fun filled day was had by all , including the Rotarian helpers : Barbara, Julie, Gery, Robin, Roy Arthur and Richard: even the weather was kind to us. A packed lunch was enjoyed with Thomas the Tank Engine as background, and it was here that we took our Group photo.

There have been considerable improvements and additions since our last visit with the children from Livingstone School, and the snow leopards were special favourites.

With hundreds of children enjoying Kids Out at Paradise Park, this was a real example of Rotary in action. A special thank you should be extended to the management of the Park for the special rates and facilities laid on for the children, year after year.

Rotary has played an enormous part in helping rid the world of Polio over many, many years.  The world press gives us very little recognition of this, so people are unaware of what we do.  We are still assisting in the last push to eliminate the disease in the few places where it is still rife.  We are justly proud of our achievements and this is only one of many projects throughout the world.

Rotary Christmas Party for the Elderly of Barnet

Christmas Day

A number of elderly people from Barnet who otherwise would have been on their own at Christmas, were treated to a traditional Christmas lunch by the Rotary Club of Barnet and East Barnet. This continues a tradition that has been on going for 27 years with invitations covering the senior citizens from across the Borough. The event is supported by Local Charities, and a number of Rotary fund raising events leading up to Christmas including street collections, and donations from local businesses.

This year the Club arranged for 45 to be collected on Christmas morning and entertained by a musician. Before lunch President Scott Maclachlan welcomed the guests and District Governor Clive Amos addressed the crowd on how Rotary in London was working with local communities at Club level in carrying out their motto of Service above Self. Clive said he was pleased to have been invited and wished the Rotarians and guests a happy Christmas. Also present was Brian Coleman – Chairman of the London Assembly and a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Finchley, and Martin Russell Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Barnet.

President Scott carved the turkey and Rotarians and visiting helpers served the meal including home made Christmas pudding. In the afternoon the guests were treated to a sing-song including carol singing. The meal was cooked by Debbie Hodge and Verity Maclachlan both wives of Barnet Club members. The guests were then returned home complete with Christmas presents given out by Santa Rotarian Richard Jefferies, who also organised the day.
